This HealthEd podcast features Dr Frances Chen, from Leichhardt Women’s Community Health Centre, and focuses on strangulation in the context of domestic, family and sexual violence. Dr Chen discusses the role general practitioners (GP) play in women’s recovery after strangulation, emphasising that GPs are often the first person a women will disclose experiences of violence to. Dr Chen uses insights learnt from her work with It Left No Marks to remind GPs they are the main coordinating point for addressing the health needs of women with this experience.

The podcast covers:

  • Approaches for healthcare professionals to initiate conversations when strangulation is suspected
  • Integrating sociocultural sensitivity into screening procedures
  • Identifying safety concerns and long-term physical effects for women in abusive relationships
  • Best practices for healthcare professionals to document strangulation incidents to support potential legal action, at the time or in the future
  • Recommended investigations, referral pathways, and available support services.

This podcast will be useful to GPs and other healthcare workers, including sexual health, prehospital care, and allied health practitioners. GPs and healthcare providers can receive CPD points for listening to this podcast on the HealthEd website after creating an account.
