This video looks at the important role that general practitioners (GPs) play in addressing women’s experiences of non-fatal strangulation and acquired brain injury. It will be useful for doctors, including general practitioners, doctors who work in hospitals, and other health professionals.

Featuring an emergency room physician, a medical forensic examiner and trainer, and two general practitioners, this short video (fewer than four minutes) will take you through signs and symptoms of strangulation, a medical examination following strangulation, and the pathway the woman might make through the health system. This includes making appropriate referrals that form part of a multidisciplinary response to her health, safety, and psychosocial needs.

It was made by Women’s Health NSW and Digital Storytellers in July 2024 using monies from the Sexual Violence Project Fund administered by the NSW Department of Communities and Justice.
