This video is for women who might have experienced non-fatal strangulation as a part of sexual assault, or through being in a relationship that includes intimate partner violence.
Featuring an emergency department physician, a medical forensic examiner and trainer, and two general practitioners working in a women’s health centre, this video explains what happens in your body when your neck is compressed.
The short video (fewer than four minutes) takes you through signs and symptoms you might experience after being strangled. It also shows you the pathway you might follow if you present to an emergency department after being strangled. The video shows that it’s important to seek medical help even days or even weeks after strangulation if things don’t feel right.
It was made by Women’s Health NSW and Digital Storytellers in October 2024 using monies from the Sexual Violence Project Fund administered by the NSW Department of Communities and Justice.
